Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight. Turn the dough out onto a large piece of plastic wrap, pat into a disk about 1-inch thick, and wrap well.Add the flour and mix on low speed until no dry flour remains, about 1 minute. Add the egg yolk, vanilla extract, and salt and mix until incorporated, about 1 minute. Cream together the butter and sugar on medium-high speed until the mixture turns pale and looks almost fluffy, about 7 minutes, occasionally stopping the mixer to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the butter to the bowl of a stand mixer and beat on medium speed for one minute.(The same basic technique applies to this cranberry curd tart.) Just heat it slowly until thickened and strain it and pour the curd into the tart crust and the whole thing goes into the oven until it sets just so (just until it loses its wiggle). Some recipes for citrus curds ask you to mess around with double boilers and have you temper the eggs, but I’ve found that if you heat everything gently in a heavy-bottomed pan there’s no need to dirty extra dishes. The passion fruit curd filling comes together easily. (If you’re looking for a less-fussy crust, you could use my easy shortbread tart crust.) Which, honestly, only adds to its charm.īut if you have a favorite sweet tart crust (also known as pâte sucrée) recipe feel free to use it here. It’s worth noting that the crust is on the fragile side, which means the edges tend to come out looking a little, ahem, rustic. The generous dose of powdered sugar gives it a lovely melt-in-your-mouth texture that I just love. The crust on this one is crisp and tender and delicate. You can thaw the frozen puree gently on the stove or in a bowl in the microwave just until it turns liquid.īe sure to use something where passion fruit is the only ingredient and avoid shelf stable passion fruit nectars or juice with added sugar. It’s generally available in the frozen fruit section at Mexican grocery stores (and is available online if your local stores don’t have it) and is high quality and easy to use. (The seeds are totally edible and sometimes used as garnish on passion fruit desserts, and you can throw them on as garnish at the end if you like, but you don’t want them in the smooth curd.)īut I tend to have an easier time finding frozen passion fruit puree. Then just slice them in half, scoop out the juicy pulp and strain out the seeds. Seek out fruit that’s heavy for its size and know that the wrinklier they are, the riper they are. You can use fresh passion fruit if you come across the wrinkly purple fruit at your local grocery store. It’s just a tropical fruit with a marigold-colored pulp that ![]() ![]() I sometimes think people hear passion fruit and think it’s some sort of impossibly fancy, pastry-cheffy ingredient, but there’s no reason to be intimidated. (But if you would rather go with lemon, this lemon ginger tart is great.) I tend to think of the passion fruit curd here tasting like lemon curd, but somehow fuller and rounder and-no disrespect to lemon curd-better. If you’re a fan of lemon desserts, odds are you’ll be into this. But one of my favorite ways to enjoy its bright, sweet-tart, tropical flavor is in a classic passion fruit tart. I love it in pots de creme, in pâte de fruit, and in popsicles. Passion fruit is one of my favorite flavors.

The damage done by an incision is a physical injury that can make a branch structurally weak in the long term and might cause it to break as the branch grows and gains more weight. The potential for damage comes when Tennessee Cicadas lay their eggs in very young trees and shoots. When females emerge from the ground, they feed on plants like any other insect but don’t cause extensive damage in doing so. Comparatively, they don’t do much damage to plants or humans there are other insects to be more worried about.” Nevertheless, there is a bit of danger with Tennessee Cicadas around young trees. Since cicadas live underground and emerge only once, they can be tracked, and we can know when to expect them. Most insects don’t have long lifespans because they’ll be eaten, so they don’t have regular generational turnover like Tennessee Cicadas. Yet some people really dread the cicada emergence, she said.David explains, “Life is pretty fragile as an insect you’re at the bottom of the food chain. The mosquito kills more people than any other animal because of malaria and other diseases. People tend to be scared of the wrong insects, says University of Illinois entomologist May Berenbaum. The year after a big batch of cicadas, trees actually do better because dead bugs serve as fertilizer, Kritsky says. They aren’t locusts, and the only plants they damage are young trees, which can be netted. There are three distinct cicada species, and each has its own mating song. When they emerge, it gets noisy - 105 decibels noisy, like “a singles bar gone horribly, horribly wrong,” Cooley says. They’ve been in America for millions of years, far longer than humans. The cicadas have been here the entire time, quietly feeding off tree roots underground, not asleep, just moving slowly and waiting for their body clocks to tell them it is time to come out and breed. ![]() But the clock was counting down, and time was running out. In a time with not much to look forward to, she simply brought a lot of joy into my life. Affairs: She told me the exact date she was going to shatter my heart There’s just too many of them to all get eaten when they emerge at once, so some will survive and reproduce, Raupp says. Cicadas evolved a key survival technique: overwhelming numbers. ![]() So Raupp and other scientists believe the big emergence is days away - a week or two, max.Ĭicadas that come out early don’t survive. Though there have been some early bugs in Maryland and Ohio, soil temperatures have been in the low 60s. Before 1950 they used to emerge at the end of May now they’re coming out weeks earlier. That’s happening earlier in the calendar in recent years because of climate change, says entomologist Gene Kritsky. The bugs emerge in large numbers only when the ground temperature reaches 64 degrees. is the only place in the world that has periodic cicadas that stay underground for either 13 or 17 years, says entomologist John Cooley of the University of Connecticut. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. “This,” Raupp says, “is one of the craziest life cycles of any creature on the planet.” Six weeks later the tiny nymphs are going to tumble 80 feet from the treetops, bounce twice, burrow down into the soil, go back underground for another 17 years. They’re going to basically fertilize the very plants from which they were spawned. Then it’s all going to be over in a matter of weeks. “Then she’s going to move out to the small branches, lay their eggs. They’re going to have some wild sex in the treetop. If she likes it, she’s going to click her wings. It’s going to be a big boy band up there as the males try to woo those females, try to convince that special someone that she should be the mother of his nymphs. “Once in the treetops, hey, it’s all going to be about romance. They’re going to try to best everything on the planet that wants to eat them during this critical period of the nighttime when they’re just trying to grow up, they’re just trying to be adults, shed that skin, get their wings, go up into the treetops, escape their predators,” he says. “You’ve got a creature that spends 17 years in a COVID-like existence, isolated underground sucking on plant sap, right? Since Tiffany does not use external grading laboratories to grade their diamonds, there is no objective 3rd-party analysis of their diamond’s cut grading. The reason is simple you want an impartial opinion of the diamond’s properties from a lab where there is no conflict of interests. If you had read my article on grading laboratories, you will know that I frown upon jewelers who use their own grading certificates instead of getting their diamonds graded at neutral 3rd party gemological labs like GIA or AGS. The thing about Tiffany is that they grade their diamonds via an in-house laboratory and that may throw some people off. ![]() Yikes! However, I do understand Tiffany’s stand to “err on the side of caution” rather than to sell diamonds that may look milky/hazy as a result of fluorescence.Įven though Tiffany may choose to sell diamonds with better color/clarity, it doesn’t make the cut quality of their diamonds necessarily better than diamonds you can get from other jewelers. Personally, I find fluorescence to be an awesome gemological property and I absolutely love diamonds with fluorescence.
